i noticed that the tiny and usually empty japanese restaurant on manhattan ave, katsu, has closed. the space is apparently turning into a branch of ichiran ramen (http://www.tokyoessentials.com/ichiran-ramen.html). it seems a bit strange to me, but the hand-written letter in the window claimed that the owner had fallen in love with greenpoint and was opening a new shop here with a september opening date. i really hope this is the case. i would LOVE a great japanese place in the area.

I saw something about that too, maybe on Eater. I agree, it would be a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Much better than that Wasabi!
I do kinda like Supercore in Williamsburg. Have you been to Zenichi?

Both Eater and NYMag/Cutlets were referencing wleatherette's posts. She scooped them both!

I haven't tried Zenkichi, although I've heard positive things (not raves, but encouraging). My favorite is Bozu, for the sushi bombs, the stinky salmon roll, and the the kataifi-wrapped jumbo shrimp tempura. I guess it's worth noting that Ichiran will be ramen-only, and unfortunately no competition for the lame sushi places in the area (Wasabi, Sapporo Haru, etc).
