Of course the price point has gotten to a point where the lack of comfort and finesse (other than on the plate) is a problem, when you can get cooking of at least the same quality in better surroundings.

Yeah, but, well, maybe not in NYC!

At a private dinner last night (in the room which was the original Milk Bar), all the old favorites showed up: the selection of hams, the pork buns, spicy rice cakes with sausage, stuffed duck, shrimp toast. All as good as ever.

There was also a skate dish which was a bit mushy. Wines were decanted, but whoever paid the check wasn’t skimping on them.

We went again a few weeks ago. There was ancient porgy, poorly shucked oysters, airport quality service, wine list in shambles. Will try once more in a decade.
sandwiches that are large and filling and do not contain tuna or prawns

Super service, but then it was a very high check private dinner.
