In my day, a teenager could afford to get in to see the Stones or The Who, then out run security to get near the front.

Big show, lots of characters, lots of dance: ideal for a high school because plenty of opportunities.
I'm (reverse) reminded of a friend's daughter, flush from playing Sally Bowles in high school Cabaret, bugging her drama coach to produce Liza the following year. Never the shiniest bulb in the chandelier.

West Side Story makes so much sense for this school. They only have one really good male singer next year (we know of), and he's from Kentucky: therefore Tony. Bernardo doesn't have any vocally challenging songs. But the school is full of Marias and Anitas.
There is pressure to do Sound of Music from the girl who's a really good singer and looks like Julie Andrews. But I don't know where the rest of that cast comes from.
All a learning experience.
