The fabric and batting were stapled in place. The cane back is in pretty nice shape it isn't broken at all, I cleaned and polished the wood and with a little more attention it'll really look fantastic.

Yes, but weren't they stapled to the underside of the cushion?

No the fabric was stapled to the frame of the chair. The "cushion" part of it was created with batting which was stuffed in between the fabric and the spings which were covered with burlap. Life would be so much easier if I had a digital camera.
