I guess I was living in the future when I stated elsewhere (to Wilf's disbelief apparently) that there were several eating places in Bushwick worth going to. The Brooklyn Paper (June 8-14 edition) has a Dining article on the soon to open "Mazelle" on Starr St (at Wyckoff), a low keyed Russian place (owned by a real Russian guy, Yury Maze) that will be pickling its own beets, cabbage, onions, eggs, etc & infusing their own whiskey, vodka and tequila. And its neither a Brighton Beach nightclub type place nor a trendy farm to table sustainable hipster joint. There goes the neighborhood... too bad the hotel isn't up and running yet to accommodate the hordes that'll be wanting to sleep locally after eating.

Not disbelief, contrary knowledge. I am rigid on this. Life Cafe and whatever was attached to the Wreck Room at the time amounts to several eating place not worth going to.

Sorry, but I am the Bushwick food-fantasy police, and I am carrying a heavy stick.

Sounds like New York's next Michelin star restaurant. Is there a forager on staff?

Tangentially, what I also find funny about this is that this is exactly the kind of place that I (and probably Lex and some others around here and on CH) will be attracted to going to and the type of place that the "farm to table" "we grow and cure/pickle everything ourselves" hipsters are imitating. However, they (the hipsters) will, no doubt, stay away from it, as its not "theirs". Of course, having not met Yuri, I might wind up surprised to find out that he's not my own idealized mom/pop immigrant owner but a Russian hipster  ... hopefully not.

Despite my lame attempts at humor, it's the sort of place I'd certainly visit if it were closer to my stomping grounds.

They have hipsters eating there, and they also have Scotch eggs. Hold me back. A great tip.

I will bet money Yuri is a hipster and not what the Chow people would consider a "real" Russian.

(Obviously I'm going.)

The branch of Life Cafe is closing this weekend. The EV original had already gone.

I think that's the end of brunch in Bushwick (oh, except for Roberta's of course).

Checking with a couple of friends who have lived in Bushwick for several years, I did come up with a pleasant restaurant to add to the list (or a bar with a few tables and a menu, anyway).

Cafe Ghia. Simple food, done well; nice people.

If you want to stereotype the New York Times' readership, this will help.

Add Miles. A pleasant, bare, storefront bar: cocktails as well as beer and wine, plus cheeses, charcuterie, sandwiches.

Really good culatello at Miles, perceived by me to be a bargain at $5 for, oh, six or seven slices (and Roberta's bread, mustard, pickles).

And still they come. Opening tonight, Dear Bushwick. Where "England meets Vermont" -- and have a baby named Twee, I suspect.

(This is a critique of the PR, not the food or service, just in case.)

Nice review for L Magazine by the estimable Cathy Erway.
