The woman who named Pluto passed at 90. She arrived at the name at age 11. The dog was named for the former planet.

Then that happened.

Venetia Phair.

Venetia Phair.

I hadn't heard her name (though I vaguely remember that Tombaugh didn't come up with Pluto.) But I'm glad I did, because it's the single best name ever.

Also, here's an interesting short piece and interview with her from 2006. And her take on the question of whether Pluto ought to be considered a planet:

QUOTE
"It's interesting isn't it, that as they come to demote Pluto, so the interest in it seems to have grown," she says.

"At my age, I've been largely indifferent to [the debate]; though I suppose I would prefer it to remain a planet."

RIP.

Good lord. Did you do anything else? We need some minimum level of accomplishment for the Goodbye forum. Or maybe not. Carry on.

How many planets (or former planets) have YOU named?

Her grandfather's name is pretty good, too.

Also, this woman must be distantly related to Liz Phair's adoptive parents.

That's a distinction of some sort.
