I'm told that I should just get an external hard drive - what do you do?

“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

I do that. Actually I've got a second external drive which I use to back up the first one. I figure for $130 for a terabyte I can afford to be a sport.

Drives die. Store on your internal hard drive and back up to an external.

I store on my internal hard drive, back up to to an external, and back up to Carbonite (still external, but not one that I see).

I like to be safe.

I also back up to CD-Rs when I think about it (which is almost never).

I'm even more old school: I actually get the photos developed, and keep them my desk. I do have a few photos on my hard drive, though.

Nice try, but I will never reveal how I store the stone tablets!

That's a solid recommendation.
