Suvir was probably the most prominent restaurant owner poster on eGullet. I believe he was also a moderator of one the Middle Eastern boards - and then came the "DiFara Affair." It was all over but the shouting after that.

Hmm, it wasn't the DiFara affair. Come on, Off the Broiler, unmask sweetpea!

(Not serious...)

As it happens, I've never really met Hemant, so although he probably knows the name "Wilfrid" after all these years, I never had the multiple comps experience at Devi. I gave it good reviews anyway, because it was...good.

You people talk like veterans of the Hundred Years War. Having survived minor eruptions at CH and rather major ones here I am so grateful to have missed entrely the eG and OA iterations.

The DiFara Affair was much ado about nothing. But, it was a defining moment in the history of eGullet because the issue alienated many members and created camps of allies and axis powers.

In one way it was the beginning of the Fall of eGullet. Many more serious incidents occurred afterwards, but (as best that I can recall) it was the first that truly split the neighborhood into two volatile camps.

For clarity's sake I should mention that I 'survived' CH in the sense that I was not hurt and did not give a toss when I was booted. For among other transgressions objecting to the ejection of Yvonne.

I recall Otto being the turning point, but then this is the wrong thread for that (although Suvir was in that discussion).

I would have said it was the thinly disguised shilling for Otto that tipped the balance. It led to resignations, bannings, and the foundation of OA.

Yes true, but I think feelings were hurt beyond repair (at least in some cases) in the DiFara issue and there was little tolerance left by the time Otto crippled the republic beyond repair. If my memory serves correct, the DiFara issue developed into a racism tirade at some point. And I tried to be a peacemaker but had little success. In fact, I received PM's from someone who appreciated my efforts that led to a nice friendship.

As a result of that blow-up, my online personality changed dramatically. Before L'Affaire DiFara, my posts were mostly serious. Afterwards, I decided online wasn't that type of venue and began posting in a much lighter style - except for this post.

At least I tip on the basis of what I received, rather than what I ordered.

Is that kind of like how the British baker guy accused someone of throwing around gay slurs when no slur was made (or at least not intended), and the baker guy ended up leaving (but not legacy-ing) eG in a huff? What was his name. . . can't remember right now.

From the side of which party?

No, never mind. It's better that I keep my innocence in this. Sometimes it's better not to know things, I think.

Dan Lepard. He was the British baker guy. Oddly, iirc the person he accused of using a gay slur was gay.

And perhaps an admin can move the flak out of this thread and into the "Are we all bitter and angry" thread?
