Now you're making me quote that old Calvin Trillin thing again:

FOODIE 1: There's this locksmith on Ninth Avenue where, if you go through the door behind the filing cabinet in the back during lunchtime, they serve the best meatballs.

FOODIE 2: Oh, that place is still good?

I also think that over time a person's judgement of the exact same food may alter, again, due to factors having noting to do with the food.

Let me put it into dating terms. You meet a very attractive girl, she's smart and pretty. You hit it off and start to go out. You become a couple. You're happy.

Then, about 8 months later, you're at a party and you meet another attractive girl. She's new. She's never heard your best stories so when you tell them she thinks they're great. She's so much fun to talk to.

Has your girlfriend suddenly gotten less interesting? Less attractive?

It's the nature of new things to be especially appealing.

Now I know why I'm not appealing - I haven't been new since the Harrison (the first one) administration.

Rich, you'll always be 39 to me.

In 8 months she might have put on weight.

...and in another month she may shed about 8-9 pounds.

Keep it up. Just wait until the women get back from lunch and see that.

That reminds me. I was the one who introduced Deb to dan dan noodles. The taste of the Szechuan peppercorns was a revelation to her (as it was to me the first time I had them.) We've had them many times since and we talk about the fact that they're never quite as good as that first time. The noodles haven't changed, our expectations have.

BTW Rich, I was in a Las Vegas sports book and saw Tocco d'Oro run well on Sunday!

He ran his little eyes out for 2nd. Bruce was gushing at his performance after the race. The track bias was against speed and after a 22.2 first quarter he had every right to stop. Bruce said if the race was Saturday instead of Sunday he would have won because Saturday's track favored speed. He's running on 3/19 and will be tough.

Bruce expects him to improve even more later this year when we go back to the turf. Touch Gold's have a knack for improving as they get older and this guy has proved that this year. He has a first, second and fourth in three starts with the last two coming in allowance races.

FYI - I have a two-year-old that should be ready in July. I named him Potus - the Secret Service code name for President of the United States - since his daddy's name is Political Force.
