If they like Japanese, there are plenty of good (albeit expensive) options.

My friend likes Japanese and fine dining. This other person sounds like a Debbie Downer due to a total lack of curiosity/sense of adventure/food restrictions. I am thinking Benoit is probably an option. Perhaps Japanese...what's good these days?

since the best japanese restaurants are in japan, aquavit would be a good choice. if meat or good seafood is the idea, smith & wollensky's will not disappoint. if old red sauce style Italian-American fits the bill, then try da noi - it will be surprisingly good. of course if raucous is the deal then try rosa mexicano for acceptable food and a lot of laughs.

Thanks all. I will send her these most recent options. She loved the Benoit suggestion.

Per Se would be more than they want to spend.

@Sneak: Not all of us.

Although it's probably the theater district, broadly defined, that I love.

I'd be surprised if dB Bistro Moderne wasn't still good.

What's that fine dining place in midtown Suzanne reported on a lot? I am just blanking on the name.
