We have not! There's a question I could ask sgordon that would reveal whether or not we've ever interacted, but I semi-like being semi-anonymous, and maybe s/he does, too.

I probably wouldn't be posting under my name if I really felt I had to be anonymous. Although I kind of wished I had a fake name during the Aska Incident.

I've never lived in a coop (chicken or otherwise) though. And I'm only classy for special occasions, and arguably just faking it even then.

Now you've got me curious what that one question which would reveal all would be, though.

Getting the average Manhattanite to go to Paris is actually much easier than getting them to go to Astoria.

Muncan has it all, and then some. That lamb prosciutto isn't bad either.

Is there any reason not to go to their Ridgewood store (which I can walk to)?

Never been to that location. I assume they have the same stock, though.

I actually have some business near Ridgewood later this week. Maybe I’ll pay them a visit.

Speaking of Ridgewood I’ve been trying to find time to get to Morscher’s Pork Store. Strong rumors of headcheese.

I don't know why I find their slogan so funny:

Our products at Morscher's Pork Store are something more than just ordinary meat and cold-cuts - they are real "Treasures of Ridgewood"

Puts me in mind of Fountains of Wayne. The store, not the band.

Hm. I might have to have a Muncan/Morscher’s face-off. No pun intended.

I’ve heard good things about the Sülze at Empire Market in College Point, which I’ve never been to mainly because it’s in College Point.

One of my all-time favorites was the Sylteflesk at Nordic Delicacies, the last of the Norwegian food shops in Bay Ridge. On their last day in business I begged the charcuterer (the eighty-something mother of the owner) for the the recipe, but she decided that since none of the grandkids were going to take over the business she was taking it to the grave.

I've been to both Muncan locations, and I think the one is Astoria is a bit of a nicer/bigger store, but they do both have the same products. The story I was told about the Ridgewood location of Muncan is that it might not be there forever.  That Ridgewood neighborhood evidently used to be home to many, many tailors** from the "old country," who shopped Muncan frequently; with gentrification, the store is not really as busy, and the owners don't know how much longer to keep it afloat.  There was also Forest Pork Store in Ridgewood, but now that store is closed to retail; only their Huntington (Huntington?!) location exists for retail.

An old blog post about Ridgewood Pork Store.

** From Wiki:

Most of the housing stock was built between 1905 and 1915 to house German immigrants who worked in the breweries and knitting factories

yeah Huntington (I guess Huntington Station? ) - near the intersection of Jericho Tpk and 110

Whats interesting to me is that while Ridgewood gentrifies, places like Middle Village are gradually becoming more and more Eastern European rather than Italian.

I got a pretty wide selection from muncan last year and thought almost everything was poorly made with way too much gelatin and heavy handed spicing. Head to head (cheese) Baczynski was much better and that's saying a lot.

And curing salt, and black pepper, but mostly gelatin.
