Until a story on local public radio, I was unaware of the term "yarnbombing". I have heard about wrapping trees and statuary with sweaters but didn't realize it was enough of a movement to have it's own International Yarnbombing day. Pretty interesting stuff that is essentially non-destructive graffiti.

Minneapolis' most well known yarnbomber goes by the name of HOTTEA. A former graffiti artist, he seems to be most interested in using fences for lettering or panels with stenciled paint. (He has a gallery show this weekend which is why there was a story on the radio.)





Other yarnbombers take on different subjects:





I find much of this pretty appealing. Particularly because of the temporary nature of the installations. Also, I like the humor in the installations that involve statuary.

I'm a knitter and I got to take part in an art installation in Austin last March. We wrapped 99 trees with knitted or crocheted pieces in colors designated by the artist. It was so much fun! There were 5 of us on our tree and we covered the trunk up to the branches. After 3 weeks, we got to take it down and now our piece has spent time on a tree in my front yard and on trees on three other knitters' front yards.
