We have an R.I.P. thread. He was known for being deeply weird, and presenting himself as a lifelong batchelor, rumored to have had affairs, but curiously tied to his mother's apron strings. The problem now, for the BBC, is the alleged cover-up.

ETA: From WikiP.

A bachelor, Savile lived with his mother (whom he referred to as "The Duchess") and kept her bedroom and wardrobe exactly as it was when she died. Every year he had her clothes dry cleaned.

Wouldn't it have been more surprising if he weren't a child abuser?

I certainly haven't come across any sense of surprise in the UK.

I know the distinction doesn't count in law, and maybe it doesn't count morally, but we seem to be talking about underage girls in their mid-teens. "Disc jockeys" had unprecedented access to that demographic, especially in the '60s and '70s, and it seems unlikely only Savile strayed.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I know I shouldn't do this, but:

Why bring it up NOW? Seems stupid.

I have a feeling some weird anti-BBC politics are involved. But what do I know, I'm an American?

Whatever the motivation, the possibility that the BBC was institutionally covering this up is news.

I guess it's true that, as shown above, Mick Jagger didn't cover up having sex with underage women in the '60s.

Of course, that's just a song.

I mean, I don't literally think he's the Devil, to choose another song from that album.

Whether or not he's a genuine admirer of the working class is something I've been trying to work out since the album came out in 1968.

I think he's ambivalent, as Suzanne would put it.
