I'm leaving Friday for an extended wander around Southern Africa. I really enjoyed StephanieL's post on Cape Town, and learning new food words :)

I didn't see any posts on Zimbabwe or Mozambique, so I'm flying blind there for now. I'll be based up in Limpopo province SA for the first couple of months, and then visiting friends in Harare, and hoping to get to the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique by March, and of course Cape Town. I'll have 2 days in Pretoria when I arrive (because I don't want 2 days in Joburg) and have little idea what that will be about, other than trip advisor and wikitravel "advice".

If I find something good to eat, I'll let you know. If you know of something good, tell me!

I have been to the bazaruto archipelago, but at an all inclusive place on my honeymoon.
Why not mayo?

I can't swing the fancy joints, but there are some cabanas in Vilanculos that look promising. What did you think? If you were in the general area, is it worth the detour? I've heard the snorkeling and diving is spectacular. Hell, even the Google Earth view looks stunning.

Its beautiful, but I have no idea what Vilanculos or the mainland is like. Literally we were choppered from the airport to the resort and back. I hardly even saw the airport.

One dish I see on almost every menu is Springbok Carpaccio.

I hope that url works, Flickr has changed the way one gets the BBCode since the last time I tried to post a pic. If it doesn't, I'll try something else.

This is a delicious dish, the meat is soft and slightly sweet, not at all gamey. This version is from the Yum Yum Restaurant in Tzaneen, up in Limpopo province.

It didn't work -- and when I edited it into a format that could theoretically have worked, I got a message saying it was an extension that isn't accepted by our software.

I say all this because I'm dying to see what it looks like.

You should try springbok biltong (jerky) next--you can get it at any biltong shop, which are everywhere including in malls.

I haven't had decent internet in several days, but I'm in Zimbabwe, staying with friends and the Internet is great. Surprises abound.

Here's the link to the page where the pic is. I still can't figure how to grab the proper BBCode. I made the pic for public view.

Description- in the center a potato salad with pea shoots, there's the meat, which was lovely, with some shaved grana padano.

Yes, the many many types of biltong, really interesting stuff, I haven't ventured far into that category, but what I've had here in Zim is quite good. A little softer than jerky, but good spicing.

Springbok a lot like venison.

And biltong is way better than regular jerky.  ;)

just seeing if I could make it work. I'm not on an iPad, though.

It is a really beautiful salad. Can't wait for more!

Thanks for uploading the picture, prasantrin! Sorry I can't sort out how to do it myself.

I hope that you'll indulge a little armchair social commentary with the food discussion, and eventual pics.

We've been in a whirlwind of social visits for holidays here in Zim. I keep losing my posts because I have to go away from the iPad to go to the store, or a house visit or some other thing. So, I'll annoyingly post in fragments for now.

Life here is interesting, to say the least. There is an "accepted" social order about it, but lots of high electric razor fencing. We are very comfortable, but of course, this is not the case for many.
