The story is that they needed four seats for crew. And they stopped at an $800 offer. I wonder how they are feeling about not stepping up to $1000, $1200 or $1500. Surely someone would have taken the offer.

 

I also wonder how high up in the org chart a decision like this goes. I'm guessing it didn't go up nearly high enough (although the UA CEO doesn't seem too savvy in the PR department). I would hope that upper level management would understand that once you have a boarding pass and are on the plane in your seat there is a sort of social contract with between the traveler and the airline that the seat is committed regardless of the fine print of your ticketing agreement. If I don't have a seat assignment and I get bumped from a flight (I have come close but it has never happened to me, and I've flown a lot of domestic Delta flights) I imagine that I'm quite a bit less pissed and belligerent than if I was seated and told I have to de-plane.

 

Didn't Southwest put a customer advocate in their central command center in Dallas after some issues with pushing back from the gate in a snowstorm and being stuck in the bullpen for hours?

This may be neither here nor there, so certainly germane to any MF thread.... but I have this feeling when I look at him, and especially his behavior when he ran back on the plane, that he's on the autism spectrum, and being grabbed (from his window seat!) and handled that way would freak him out more than if not.

But frankly, the way they treated him was frightening. Why did they not know before boarding that there was a full flight + four deadheads? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

CEO Munoz has now apologized to Mr Dao. And stated that United will be updating its policy for bumping.

 

FWIW, I've flown a few extremely low fare United flights in the past year, and they never issue me a seat number.  Have to get it at kiosk check in, not even when you confirm.  I'm sure that's so I can't get on the plane until they know what they have to deal with.  Easier to rebook me than to kick me off the plane.

 

BTW, cheesemonger, your suggestion he may be on the autism spectrum makes a lot of sense. Especially if he had already "settled in" and was now being uprooted.

I think I'm with Liz Bruenig on this one – how does digging up Dao's history do anything to serve the public interest? It doesn't have any bearing on whether how he was treated is acceptable.

but it's part of the rules of engagement. when the victim is "other" the victim must be proven unworthy of consideration.

United had to call the police to have him removed. He was on private property. When he bought the ticket he entered into a contract saying, United can throw you off the flight.

He didn't listen to the police. They had to forcibly remove him from a plane. After two hours worth of warning and talking. He delayed the whole plane two hours. He's obviously not mentally stable. Happy he is not allowed to practice medicine. If you don't listen to a cop, they hurt you. If the police are not allow to enforce law, then what's the point of law.

There are three players in this story. Dao, United and the Police. I blame Dao and United.

Dao was allowed to resume practicing with restrictions in 2015, BTW.

Re-reporting TMZ just seems low – proper journalists have better things to do. I think it's much more interesting that Dao won nearly a quarter-million dollars on the WSOP, actually.
I didn't tip at Per Se either.

The Washington Post observes that this type of story ticks a lot of boxes for what it calls the Twitter Mob.

Most people have had some unfortunate airline experiences. United has a reputation for being a brutal outfit, with passengers and employees.

But they see the rage as a corrective to otherwise unchecked corporate, media, or political power.

I've not heard of an offer of hand cuffs, but I do know several people who have significant status on UAL who've been booted from first after they've been seated.  Getting kicked out of first and into a middle seat in coach seems doubly unpleasant

 

The oligopoly of major airlines pretty much allows them to do what they wish. The terrorism rules make disobeying a directive from the flight crew a potential criminal offense. The nature of the market means if you want a direct flight out of Houston to almost anywhere you take United.  Out of Atlanta, Delta, etc.

today, Delta finally got back to me on a complaint lodged in January regarding a denied priority boarding and a number of other service failures that led to a clusterfuck of a flight. i'm guessing the other airlines don't want to get lumped in with United as customers are sharing their bad experiences on social media this week and making some remedial efforts at customer service.
