I can also give Munich recommendations for places that aren't particularly kid-friendly.  ;)

Nuremberg again.  I really do like the old brewery/distillery with the red beer. Food is fine too.  The tourist trap old wurst places not so much.

Frankfurt:  I was only there for a night but I did hit two of the big cocktail bars:

The Kinly. Everyone sends you here.  It's in a basement in the red light district.  Drinks were fine if trending sweet.  Very hipster crowd.  Overpriced for being cash only.

The Embury.  Fantastic.  In a business area, not hipster.  But insane whiskey selection.  Real talent behind the stick.  Drink here.

Have you done much drinking in Munich? I have found the hipster places uniformly trending sweet (some better than others) but there are some very good oldster places.

Lots of beer in Munich.  Only cocktail drinking has been at Schumann's (which I rather enjoy even if a bit dated) and at Bar Negroni (which tends sweet but very nice people).

Lots of beer in Munich.  Only cocktail drinking has been at Schumann's (which I rather enjoy even if a bit dated) and at Bar Negroni (which tends sweet but very nice people).

That's my experience as well. My impression is:

1) most serious bartenders in Munich worked for Schumann at some point and

2) most Germans seem to be super-tasters.

This means you can get very good cocktails almost anywhere if you order a classic, but all attempts at innovation end up tasting like candy.

With the above in mind, here are some tips:

  • Best atmosphere: Goldene Bar at Haus der Kunst, Flushing Meadows at Fraunhoferstrasse, and Barroom in Haidhausen
  • I really miss Zest. One of the owners opened a Tapas place near Gärtnerplatz but its not as good.
  • Negroni owner also has a newer place called Belvedere Boulevardier. Excellent currywurst too.
  • Not a bar, but you might want to check out Szenedrinks near Frauenhoferstrasse for really interesting spirits to take home
  • I really wanna try Salon Irkutsk
  • This is a wierd one: Agnes 9 in Schwabing (near Elisabethmarkt) is modelled on a Heligoland old man bar basically. But they cure their own corned beef for Labskaus (the kitchen is competent but portions huge) and they have an unusually interesting Whisky collection. They do tastings once in a while. If Wilf ever came to Munich I would take him here.

Ooh, thank you for those.

I’ll be in Nuremberg again in May. Could probably do a Munich side trip again. We should get a drink.

Yes I want labskaus.

I have never been to Munich. I’ve done the south west route from Frankfurt down to Konstanz, as well as around Hamburg.

Isn’t labskaus from Hamburg (I ask in almost complete ignorance)?

Yes. The bar in question has a “North Sea” theme. It’s been around for 45 years now so it’s kind of a neighborhood institution.

I forgot, relevant for you they also do that kale dish (Grünkohl mit Pinkel) in season.

Mouthfuls members really have deeply unfashionable tastes in food. I guess I know why I’m here.

Having lived in HH for seven years, I never developed a taste for Labskaus. In fact, I find it disgusting. But slow-cooked Gruenkohl mit Pinkel on a cold winter night? Outstanding.

Ideally, Grünkohl mit Pinkel AND Kassler, with a goodly amount of fat.

There's Labskaus, and there's Labskaus.

Ooh but we all know, don’t we, that labskaus became popular in Liverpool (port city with strong Hamburg connections) which is why they’re called “scousers”?

Variations on the dish were seen by me as a kid in London.
