At the Metropolitan Opera last night, there was a gentleman walking past me during intermission wearing what appeared to be hot-pants length lederhosen. Over tights, as far as I could tell. Can't say I took much notice of the rest of his outfit. (Would you, after your eyes had slid past that?)

Vindication is mine and the NY Times in on it.

Michigan Puts the Short Back in Its Shorts

The Michigan freshman Isaiah Livers can only marvel when he watches highlight clips of the Wolverines’ Fab Five days.

“How do you play that way?” Livers asked.

He wasn’t referring to the style of play. He was talking about the style of attire.

Those extra-baggy shorts that the former Michigan stars Chris Webber and Jalen Rose made famous? Almost 30 years later, this year’s Wolverines just aren’t feeling it.

...

This is music to the ears of the men’s wear expert Mark-Evan Blackman, an assistant professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He began noticing shorter shorts becoming popular again among athletes — tennis players included — around 2013. In his opinion, the change to a more tailored fit could not come soon enough.

“That’s the antithesis of fashion,” Blackman said of the baggy shorts. “I’m glad to say goodbye.”

“The long shorts are out of date,” the sophomore Ibi Watson said. “If they can touch your knees, they’re way too long.”

...

Although Michael Jordan started wearing oversize shorts in the 1980s — purportedly so he could comfortably fit his University of North Carolina shorts underneath — for many, it was Michigan that was to blame for popularizing the billowy uniforms favored by its highly regarded freshman class of 1991.

That team’s players stretched the definition of “shorts.” They said goodbye to knees. They made nuns appear immodest. The attire began to resemble drapery. Streetwear fed into the on-court look, which further influenced the broader culture. Bagginess begot bagginess.

And, now, the current generation of Michigan players kind of feels bad about that.

“That’s not my swag,” the freshman guard Jordan Poole said. “I feel more comfortable with the short shorts.”

I first started noticing this trend in 2014 and posted about it in 2015 and again a year later.

It's going to take awhile to filter down.  Men tend to buy their clothes and  then wear them until they fall to pieces.  You can still occasionally see this on the street.

They bought them in 2012 and by God they're going to keep wearing them.  But the future looks bright for the rest of us.

Lebron James arrived at Oracle Arena for the NBA finals wearing a suit with short pants.

Not approving his version.    Just sayin'.     Actually have more problem with suit and shirt fit than shorts.

If your purpose is to instruct the uninitiated, perhaps describing its color rather than get hung up over process.    People don't usually think of a white "stew" or even meat dish.    Like, the name "blanquette" gives native speakers the clue

Thank you, that's better stated.  I would say cream sauce because that would indicate to the eater what it is both from an ingredient and color perspective, whereas I believe stew would mislead.  It's not about how it got cooked.

Thanks, Admin. Could you please combine with this original thread and delete my redundancy?

So far, this new thread is more interesting. Should my shorts match a white cream sauce and be part of the stew that is my life’s fashion choice?

I couldn't repeat that mis-post if tried.    Haven't a clue how that happened.    Stew sounds much more practical than cream, IMHO.

Admin note: in the future if you look at the Recently Updated at the top of the topic, go to custom, pick show all and all the topics in the forum will show. Then you can find the topic.

A little more tailoring, and the shorts LeBron was wearing would pass muster in the offices of Bermuda.  Though he'd have to change the footwear.
