From Ravi DeRossi, another vegan option. Swanky little bar-restaurant in the old Bourgeois Pig digs.

The challenge, I think, is serving really high quality, pristine vegetables, at affordable small plate prices.  Dishes were pleasant, but the flavor was all in the condiments and sauces -- balsamic vinegar, smoky chipotle sauce, corn puree -- while the vegetables were unremarkable. A drawback in a vegetable restaurant.

They did demonstrate the possibility of creating a fondue from vegan cheese melted down in white wine.  That was quite nice.  But again, some of the dipping items, especially stringy green beans, just weren't exciting.

But if you need a vegan option, there you are.

And...the ingredient problem rears its ugly head.

I liked (once, so far) the new vegan Thai on E. Broadway.

Had respect for her as the First Lady, but never knew she was a vegan.

Her husband was an interesting character.

It took me a while to get that partly because I thought Rich might have been joking about my wife’s presidential first name (which he certainly isn’t expected to remember).

Does Dirt Candy handle this better? Looong time since i’ve been.

On my recent first visit, I didn't think so.

Similar problem, too: too much use of extraneous flavorings to hide the fact that what was in the center of the plates were rather undistinguished vegetables.

Not even, in my judgement, best stuff from the green market.

Oh I did forget, the buffalo maitake buns were really good (very spicy). Maybe get a couple of those ($4) and a cocktail.
