Not sure why, but ruminating about the film "Yesterday," the Beatles and times past, I thought about Procul Harum.  At some point I had owned their Whiter Shade of Pale lp and Grand Hotel.  When in college some were touting them and in particular Reid's lyrics as some sort of revelation.  Not sure I ever caught that, but Brooker and Trower had a certain appeal.  Personnel have come and gone but it seems some leg or appendage of the band carries on.  What does it all mean?

Then that happened.

Maybe that the drugs were better back then?

It seems Gary Brooker is still fronting the band.  My mum knew his mum.  Also I went to see Robin Trower solo once, but he canceled at the last minute.

That's all I've got.

We thought they were, but what did we know.

A brief review of the catalog, and god is it awful... Even the handful of remembered songs are grim dirges. They couldn’t be Soft Machine, they weren’t slick enough to be Supertramp, they aren’t even as oddball and interesting as Jethro Tull.

Well done for paying the bills with this stuff.

And Gary Brooker was presented as a great white rock vocalist.

That's why I'm so down on whiteboy rock.

I mean, he doesn't sound soulful.  He sounds constipated.

I won't lie, though.  There is a bunch of their songs I really like, to this day.  "Shine On Brightly".  "Whiskey Train".  "Memorial Drive".  "Simple Sister".  "Bringing Home the Bacon".

This is why -- I can tell you this from very explicit personal experience -- so many of us went so crazy about Rod Stewart in the early '70s.  He didn't sound constipated.

I still listen to the first four Rod Stewart albums obsessively.  And the Faces albums non-obsessively.  (Before hollywood has a chance to mention them, I don't have much time for the Jeff Beck Group albums.)

The Faces have what I believe is the single best White Rock Group box set:  Five Guys Walk into a Bar . . . .

It's the only White Rock Group box set that captures the band perfectly, and is better than any of their individual albums (or all their albums in the aggregate).

If we had this when I was in high school, I probably never would have left my bedroom (for better or for worse).
