Pitcher and author of the famous tell-all book "Ball Four".

Lots of famous people dying over the past week, including Arte Johnson and Ross Perot.

Wait didn't he die last year?

Who am I thinking of?

Anyway, Ball Four was formative.  And The Long Goodbye is one of my favorite movies.

Not to divert this thread from the decedent to me and to other authors, but I recently met someone whose landlord is a similarly formative writer for me, James Simon Kunen.  I tried to explain to him how important Kunen was for me, what a huge influence, but I couldn't find a way to.  I mean, how can you start to say what an impact The Strawberry Statement had on you and your nascent writing style without sounding like a moron?

The Strawberry Statement

What a tangled web is woven when looking at that movie's screenplay.

By Israel Horovitz, father of Beastie Boy Adam. And evidently a sexual predator according to the NY Times.

There were other authors in that period who likewise influenced the likes of me.  Thinking of Raymond Mungo's Famous Long Ago and Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Meanwhile, Ball Four!

Then that happened.

Israel Horovitz is a lot more than Ad-Rock's father.

He sure is, but maybe a lot of that is best left unsaid?

He was a really good post-season pitcher.

Yes - and also the disgraced co-founder and former director of the Gloucester Theatre Company. But basically, a shit.
