I know, I know. But sometimes I get home late, too tired to open the fridge never mind rustle something up. I try to keep a little cheese and fruit on hand for such circumstances, but things happen and I find myself starving at 9 PM with no food in the house.

I decided the other night to take a shot at Pastis rather than my standbys of Grand Sichuan or a margherita from Pizza 33. After all, I have dined at Pastis many times and the food while not stunning is usually quite satisfying. Pea soup was nice, not too thick and well seasoned. But a croque monsieur--ai yi yi. Despite the presence of superior bread and good ham and cheese, the sandwich was a mess. It had so much bechamel on it under the cheese that when I bit into it the sauce squirted out all over me, the plate, through the cheese, etc. And it was not a great bechamel--slightly gelatinous and floury. Ick.

Southern man: What the hell is a steak free-tes?
Southern woman: Oh honey, it's a chicken fried steak and they probably serve it with grits. This is where famous people come to eat like real human beings.
Southern man: Well hell, they should call it somethin' more respectable than Pasties.

If we didn't have Jinmyo, we'd have to make her up, except we couldn't. :o

This could be a thread unto itself: restaurants whose take-out quality is seriously inferior to their dine-in quality. Not enough thought goes into choosing, prepping and packing food to go.

This is the only thread on this place? It certainly has an auspicious beginning. laugh.gif

We went there last night before the Dylan show. Service begain weirdly, with the waiter taking our drink orders, delivering the drinks & then walking away. We had to flag him down to get menus. Service was sharp after that, though.

Burger was OK, not a home run - nicely grilled, but the meat tasted flat. Fries were peculiar, quite good when they were hot, but tasted kind of bad once they cooled down a bit, like the fryer oil needed changing or something.

My friend liked his hot tuna sandwich. Later, at the show, we saw a guy with a "Got Jorma?" T-shirt. It's Tuna season in New York.

Anyone else read the Esquire article on Pastis? (Current issue.)

Starr says the new one will look the same but have much better food.

Would have been much funnier if he said it will look much better but the food will be the same.

Boy that is some piece of an article. Rhône, opened around the same time. McNally has pioneered remote neighborhoods; this is a ridiculous example.
