Hollywood, if you have nothing going on tonight you should go see Maggie Koerner at the The Bootleg Theater.

The Black Pumas. Fun bad that is quite tight and sounding like old school soul of the 70's. My daughter said sounds like Marvin Gaye/Al Green with a little Leon Bridges. Excellent groove. The band itself is very good but lead singer Eric Burton is special. Soulful, engaging with a purposeful voice.  They don't have a lot of songs so the set was relatively short with a cover or two thrown in. "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" was a cover the Black Pumas made their own. They had the crowd going from the first note of the first song to the last. I've seen many bands at this venue but rarely such a strong reaction from the crowd. The merchandise table was mobbed after the show which is usually a sign of success.

Seeing this band for $20 in a 180 seat venue could be considered stealing.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at The Cap. First time ever seeing Isbell outside of the Truckers for me.  He has great songs, both slow ballads and in your face rock and roll. Played a few Truckers songs including Decoration Day. Also covered Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac. A fiery Little Wing was one of the highlights. His band is very good. And all around excellent show.

Tom Morello in his one-man show, limited 3-night run, at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

Pretty fucking great.

Maggie Koerner was her usual awesome self at The Mercury Lounge last night. Left her heart on the stage. A set of dark, hopeful and soulful music. With a solid young band.

Took our daughter to see her for the first time. She is in the music biz and after the first song, “Wow, so many things going thru my head right now,”

Ps, the sound at The Mercury Lounge is most excellent.

Following JTF’s lead, quick dinner at Blue Ribbon Izakaya afterwards.

Yes.  Kinda like a song from every era/band.

I went to the first rage concert in dc about a week before their first album came out in 1992. every dc hardcore kid was there to see the guy from inside out’s new band, and it seemed like a lot of people had the demo because a lot of people knew the lyrics and were going off. it didn’t take long before their success made them deeply uncool, of course, but they were a good live band back then.

that show was at the old 9:30 club on F street. I also saw them at WUST hall, which turned into the current 9:30 club, about a year later, and at lollapalooza.

Witnessed Charli XCX at the Wiltern last night.  Loud, high energy (sold out) show.  Here's a spot on review.  https://www.billboar...s-concert-recap

Her new album, Charli, is energetic in an electropoppy way and eclectic.  She and her collaborators have a way of cranking out catchy hits.

The opener was Brooke Candy who seems to be fashioning herself as a white girl Cardi B.  The best tune she did was one that heavily sampled Snoop's "I Wanna Rock" although her version was "I Wanna Fuck Right Now."  Not to my taste, but hey something for everyone.
