The strawberries at GAP are pathetic.

Haven't had any greenmarket strawberries yet, but gotta figure they're a bit over watered.

I got some. They're not very good.

Lodi farm stand ->  Qt of cherries, 6 cukes, 20 stalks ruby rhubarb = $12.     In town (SF) the rhubarb alone would have been that much.      I haven't made a rhubarb pie in ??? years!

Rhubarb sauce on duck breast this week!  (Would have been strawberry rhubarb -- but not with THOSE strawberries.)

Do we have radishes right now? We do.

Remember my advocacy of treating them like baby turnips, roasting or poaching in stock.

I also like them sautéed.

Since it's a monopoly, the green market should impose quality standards (E.g. No roots from last November) and limits on markups vs wholesale.

I swear I’m not being argumentative today, but this is a fundamental misunderstanding of how Green market works. All farms are independent businesses; green market provides space but limited oversight. It’s also not a monopoly. There are numerous market sponsors throughout the boroughs and tri state area.

That's great to know. So how do I go about setting up a second market sponsor that provides space on, say, Union Square?

ETA: The rulebook sure seems to imply oversight that is not in line with a space provider. I can see no reason it can't be improved to protect consumers from bad practices in terms of safety, quality, and pricing.

both vendors and people who work for the grand army plaza greenmarket have told me they limit the number of vendors in each category, which was offered as an explanation of why there was only one cheese place at GAP and why the much better fort greene cheese mongers weren’t there.
