The newest HEB is opening in south Austin soon. It's going to have lots of elements of Central Market. Our catering manager has taken on the job of hiring and training for their Chef's Case (prepared foods) and our store is training the new partners.

May 10, opening day, promises to be lots of fun. FIRST of all, our own LonghornGal is the store director! (Congrats, girl: you've earned it!! I remember you when you were just a checker at Central Market, oh so long ago...sniff) Secondly, our dear Pillsbury winner is going to be there along with her new best friend, the Pillsbury Doughboy. Look for Anna's mug plastered all over the freezer doors in the store (coincidentally, this will be Anna's home store). Hey, LGH: if you are reading this, save me a poster!

I won't be in town, but I'll be thinking about you guys!

I'm looking forward to it. I think. The lack of sleep and time to think is making me a bit punch-drunk. Don't expect to hear much from me in the next 2 weeks, although I do appreciate phone calls asking if I'm still alive, or if you can borrow my dog, or if my identity was stolen in the great B-School data hack this week (thanks F52!) If you are eating lunch or dinner in waaaay south Austin anytime soon, call me and I might sneak out for some respite.

However we have got some exciting new tricks up our sleeve so look forward to a great time at the new store! Just think... all the cool specialty and natural stuff, plus you can buy Coke and Charmin. Ah, bliss.

...man, have I got some good stories to share from hiring. Once the madness calms, I'm going to have that Mouthfuls event I keep talking about at my house. I think the theme will be "Punch Drunk BBQ". ;) Start planning your grilling strategy now.

Ask a question in Chinese and see if I answer!

Or ask what my favorite Boone's Farm flavor is.

Looks like there will be a blurb in the Austin American Statesman next week.

Grand Opening is May 10. Wed. 6am. See you there. I'll be the one with the namebadge on.

Today I got to try some of the new offerings... can we say TASTY!?!?!?! oh, yeah.

Will you hang on to the Statesman so I can read it when I get back?

We're going to miss having your wonderful chef's case partners at our store: they are a great bunch of people. Specially the professor!

Great blurb in the Stateman today. Can not imagine LHG gave up on the space for Longhorn T-shirts without a fight....

By popular demand, new H-E-B in Circle C has Central Market cafe

The 93,000-square-foot H-E-B store scheduled to open at Slaughter Lane and Escarpment Boulevard Wednesday will make local history with the inclusion of a Central Market Cafe on the Run. In addition to the bulk bar of salsas, soups, a salad bar and custom hot- and cold-sandwich bars, the cafe will have many of the chef-prepared meals popular at Central Market. Among them will be one-dish meals such as lasagna and chicken enchiladas, meatloaf dinners, apricot chicken salad, flank steak and Aunt Pearl's potato salad. All of the food will be prepared at Central Market North and delivered to the new Circle C-area store, unlike the H-E-B near Dell Diamond, where Central Market recipes are made in-store.

The Southwest Austin supermarket will see other Central Market influences, as well: an expanded produce area with baby vegetables, locally grown items, more organics and 400 cheeses with two full-time designated cheese specialists. The 44-foot seafood counter is H-E-B's largest in the area and will stock live Dungeness and king crabs.

Leslie Lockett, H-E-B spokeswoman for Central Texas, said the chain worked extensively with the neighborhood in planning the store, limiting its size, incorporating "green" building principles and selecting merchandise. The Central Market products and Cafe on the Run, as well as fresh items and organics, were requested items. Forfeited for space were a bank, seasonal aisles and Longhorns T-shirts.
The store will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Man, I'm sorry I'm missing the opening! I hope someone tells me all about it. Anna is supposed to make a guest appearance with the Pillsbury Doughboy . I would pay cash to see that.
