#1432071 cacao beans

I drink Crio Bru, which are ground cacao beans that you brew like coffee.

Never heard of it before, but it sounds really intriguing.  Can you find it in shops, or do you have to buy it online?  And does it have a bitterness profile similar to that of coffee?

I bought it on Amazon. I find it far less bitter than the coffee I drink, but YMMV :)

Yes! I started drinking it--I mix it 50/50 with coffee--because I was having acid issues. This really helps with that. I like it with a splash of unsweetened almond milk and sprinkle of cinnamon, which gives it just the right amount of sweetness. It is very low cal since there is nothing added to the cacao. I just order online--usually Amazon, but you can also order directly from the company. https://criobru.com/

Most anything that my Mom had cooked because it would mean that she was still alive and able to cook like she did for so many years.

Well, dang, you people who come to KC and don't say anything! We love to meet MF folks. :-) Next time, give a heads up.

We are leaving in a couple of days--driving to So. Calif. then back to Salt Lake City. Expect to do some good eating in many places.

I got one of these this weekend. I haven't used it yet, but am hoping it will make life so much easier for my arthritic hands!

#1347811 Do you (still) use cookbooks?

Like many others, I still have them/buy them and even read them, but use them more for inspiration that actually following the recipes. Except most baking. I do follow those recipes.

I was back in OC a couple of times during the last month. I didn't have a lot of time for going out, but did want to give a quick report before I forgot.

http://goldentruffle.com/ The Golden Truffle on Newport Blvd. used to be one of my favorite places. Always fun and the food always inventive. I hadn't been there in probably 8-10 years. I went for dinner last weekend and am happy to say it has not changed much. Food is still outstanding and fun, service is among the best. You can see photos on my Facebook page here:

Entree was New Zealand spearfish atop potatoes, drizzled with lemon basil oil and topped with fresh lemon basil. It was fabulous.

Only other report is that I had lunch one day at Las Brisas in Laguna Beach. http://www.lasbrisaslagunabeach.com/ Not much to say about it as I've always felt like it was a place mostly for the view and people watching. Hasn't changed. Had gazpacho and salad. Both were nice, but nothing to write home about. Too bad that location isn't still Victor Hugo's.

Wish I had more to report, but it was mostly eating on the run or not at all.

#1324442 Another new subscription service...

Came across this on Facebook. I like the suppliers they use. I tried one of these services before and it was quite good. Not something I would use unless I had something preventing me getting out to shop (which I actually enjoy), but I can see the usefulness for people who can't do that or aren't good at creating their own meals.

#1323797 Try The World

Posted by Maison Rustique on 08 March 2015 - 09:34 PM

Since we moved to the mid-west, I find it much more difficult to experiment with other cuisines, foods, ingredients. I'm not saying they aren't available, but not as readily available to me as they were in Orange County. Heck, I can't even get to Trader Joe's very often these days! So, I jumped on this when I came across it. It is one of those subscription services--you get foods from a different country each time--every 2 months. I didn't think the price was that outrageous, but then I haven't actually gotten a package yet, so they may not be as swell as the photos look. Should you decide to try it (and I'm not pushing it--esp. since I can't personally say how it is yet), but if you do and use this link, you are supposed to get $15 off. And I don't get anything for the referral, so I don't really feel that I'm spamming.
