Aquaman

14 January 2019 - 02:33 AM

I never paid much attention to Aquaman growing up reading comics.  He seemed dull,  This is not a dull Aquaman.  He has super powers I'd not been aware of before (basically, he's pretty indestructible).  This isn't a good film, but it is surprisingly entertaining (if overlong).  You get the origin story.  You then get a lot of conflict that is part Star Wars under the sea and part Indiana Jones and a little bit Godzilla.  At first, there's some snarky humor.  Then, the film just goes high camp with all sorts of stilted dialogue, elaborate settings and costumes, giant sea monsters, big battles, sword (trident) fights, etc.  The groundwork was laid for a sequel.  https://www.imdb.com...4/?ref_=nv_sr_1

FWIW, Julie Andrews voices some character in the film.

Mary Poppins Returns

27 December 2018 - 01:38 AM

This is a well-made Disney film that demonstrates the craft Disney can bring to a project.  Emily Blunt steps into the Julie Andrews role flawlessly.  Lin-Manuel Miranda is good although you miss him rapping.  Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury have fun cameos.  Meryl Streep has a looney role that she enjoys.  And most of the cast gets to fly in the end.

The Mule

19 December 2018 - 10:32 PM

Eastwood is an angry old white guy, Earl, who mellows out and decides family is the most important thing in life.  But to get to that epiphany, he has to work as a drug mule for a Mexican cartel.  Big cast including Bradley Cooper, Dianne Wiest and Andy Garcia among others.  https://www.imdb.com..._=tt_cl_sm#cast
