We started at the Golden Shopping Mall with an amazing lamb soup with hand pulled noodles (there is a very good thread on CH)...rich lamb broth with thick, chewy noodles, tender fatty lamb chunks, shreds of seaweed, lily budy, beancurd skin shreds, and glass noodles. Exceeded my expectations, which were very high. Next we had 3 kinds of ro bing at another stall (same mall)...pork, beef and lamb. These are very tasty little sandwiches, on a flat, round bread, which is seared on a griddle maybe and split and stuffed with spiced chopped meats. The beef had cumin seeds in it. Oily and delicious. The man behind the counter, who actually spoke english, recommended a soup, so we got one small serving of that. Despite the incendiary appearance of the oil floating on the top, it was not very hot, and was very tasty. There was a cloud of the lightest, softest tofu floating in it, it disappeared in your mouth. Hints of rice vinegar. After the ro bings, we had some nice fried dumplings at the Shandong dumpling stall. Surly said they have been better, but they were good anyway, light and crisp.
We moved on to the J&L Mall, down the Street. There we had some really great dan dan noodles, loaded with flavor. These are the first dan dan noodles I have even liked and I liked them a lot. Steve brought some pork steamed buns from one of the stalls (not the muslim one, I think, Steve?) which were quite nice. However, after that we had a pretty negative experience at the Chinese Muslim food stall, which has been recommended, but I think you have to speak chinese in this case. Surly tried to order some lamb or mutton buns but ended up with several red bean ones. Ok, no problem, miscommunication. But then the man behind the counter brought us a bowl of the smelliest, ugliest looking soup...NO NO NO, we all chimed in at once, we did NOT order that. He was having none of it, and insisted we had, and left it with us. We sort of looked at it and looked at each other....Omnivorette tasted it, and innard lover though she is, she gave it a thumbs down. Then the unfriendly counter man brought us ANOTHER bowl!!! Again, "NO! NO! NO!" but being that is was so dirt cheap we just let it rest. But he had a really bad attitude, whereas everyone else we had dealt with had been friendly and interested and patient. I went outside to avoid the odor. When the rest had had enough and came outside, Surly told me that the soup had tasted like liquified offal and not in a good way. Ugh.
Not to leave things on a negative note, we moved on to the Best Northern DUmpling Shop (where was this, not in either mall but still on Main St) and had some truly delicous pork and suon cai dumplings, suon cai is a kind of preserved mustard green and it added a very slight tang to the incredibly juicy pork dumpings (boiled). Had we not all been so stuffed at this point we would have tried more varieties...
Oh, on the way to Best Northern we stopped for a peking duck bun at a stand that has been written up...my verdict is eh. Too sweet for my taste.
All in all a most delicous crawl and the company was top notch. I had a complete blast.

Where did we have those cabbage dumplings? I loved those. I loved almost everything we ate, but especially the first soup, and then those lamb and beef and pork sandwiches. Oh - and especially the dan dan noodles which were just unbelievably delicious and unlike any I had had before.
And I loved that the Best Northern menu had "wanton soup" listed on it.
A great and tasty time.

Were the "wanton dumplings" saucy?Yes, they had wanton dumplings and aquatic food dumplings too. Isn't that what it was, aquatic food? I have the card somewhere but not here.

We had the cabbage dumplings at the Shandong dumpling stall in the Golden Shopping Mall, I think. We also had some kind of big steamed bun with veggies at the Chinese Muslim stall. (BTW, despite the nasty soup and the nastier attitude, I really liked the deep fried red bean bun from there.) The pork buns that Steve R got at J&L were from the first place on your right as you go in.
It was a great food adventure.
Actually we had the fried dumplings at the Shandong dumpling stall at the golden shopping mall. I was referring to the last dumplings we had, which were at a place that was not in Golden or J&L (they were boiled). That deep fried red bean bun, that was the one we compared to a donut, right? And I know where you are talking about, where Steve got the pork buns, that's what I suspected. Good to know for future reference.

Yes. It was greasy, but in that addictive way. I probably could have eaten the whole thing.

Yes, I liked it too, but I was already a bit full and had had enough red bean already. But it was tasty.
