Pushing the limits of NYC, a bit, I suppose.
Golden Otter is a modern brewpub located on the far west side of New Paltz, NY, on the site of the former Walkill Valley Railroad's station. New Paltz is about seventy miles from Manhattan, the site of a state university, and one of the very few towns in the USA ruled by the Green Party.
Golden Otter typically has 4 or 5 homebrews on tap: a lager, a red ale, a dark ale, and a seasonal are always found. The current special is Get Out of Jail Ale, proceeds from which will help pay legal expenses for their mayor and two Unitarian ministers who've solemnized same sex marriages. The restaurant also has a wide range of lunch and dinner items from burgers ($7.50) to ribeye ($19).
We had the burgers, delightful 10 oz beauties, one with roquefort cheese dripping down the sides. Three beers, two burgers, and a decent tip were about $40. There weren't any celebrations underway when we were there, but it could be a very nice place for an informal, non-vegan, reception
Directions: Exiting the Thruway, head west into New Paltz, stay on the same street, go down the hill on the same street, and the Golden Otter is on your right as the vista opens onto a wide valley.
If you take the trailways bus, the Otter is about three blocks past the bus station.

"Peter Kiewit looked for three things in hiring people. He looked for integrity, intelligence and energy. And he said if a person didn’t have the first…that the latter two would kill him. Because if they don’t have integrity, you want ‘em dumb and lazy. You don’t want ‘em smart and energetic.”

I was last in New Paltz 30+ years ago, for a summer weekend at a spiritual/yoga retreat on Lake Awosting - hey, it was the '70s - where a college pal and I earned our keep by working in the kitchen.
She lives there now, and wants me to visit. Burgers and brew will be perfect. Thanks, Paul.
