and a producer too.
I had a drink with Tom Cruise at the bar at Chinoise on Main in Venice Beach; some years back. He was a star but not at the level he is now. Seemed like a good guy..he was with a guy friend. My friends were a bit intimidated but we talked like 2 guys having a beer..no biggy. 2 guys sharing a laugh..of course 1 guy was on his way to Hywood stardom and 1 wasn't..but we had a lot of laughs.

a celebrity. They're all so much smaller than you'd think, for one thing. I was
at an event at the Rubin last month and there was this guy rattling off facts and
figures about Buddhism, Himalayan art, and the flow of Tibetan refugees into
India. He had a face that was vaguely familiar, and after a while it clicked that
he must be Robert Thurman. By then it was too late for me to touch him (I'd
been standing right next to him for most of the event) to get some of that
celebrity glitter to rub off.
I was puzzled later to hear people refer to him as Richard. It turns out it was
Richard Gere.

I think you spend some time in Boston. I was on line at Parziale's, a North End bakery, early on a Sat AM picking up pastries and an unshaven poorly dressed man was waiting next to me. I recognized him and said to him "should I know you?" He said, "shh I'm incognito." I said, "ok Mr Mayor." It was Meninno. He's about the same size IRL as he appears in the media.
I'm amazed that anybody can recognize anybody, especially anybody who's
a celebrity. They're all so much smaller that you'd think, for one thing. I was

Cambridge, that is, because I used to live next door to him. Along that
same street walked Governor Weld and Justice Breyer, on the way to their
cheese fix at Formaggio Kitchen, but I never spotted them myself. The
only political figure I recognized locally was Robert Reich (now *there's*
a small celebrity).

Ah, I have no trouble recognizing "the mayor" -- the mayor of the City of
Cambridge, that is, because I used to live next door to him. Along that
same street walked Governor Weld and Justice Breyer, on the way to their
cheese fix at Formaggio Kitchen, but I never spotted them myself. The

Except Ed Koch. I was stunned the first time I saw him in person. Seeing him on TV all those years, I took him to be a little guy. In fact, he's 6'2".I'm amazed that anybody can recognize anybody, especially anybody who's

I saw him in a movie line one time & walked over, looked up at him - it was indeed up - & asked if he was really going to let the Union Square Greenmarket close, back when it was apparently in trouble. He said, "Don't worry, it's not going to close." Dat was true too.

Mayor Ray Flynn introduced himself to me three or four times one night in a Southie bar. Can't really say how tall he was he see ed to have some trouble standing

Ms 9 just saw him in the Parker House last week. He's not a stranger to JJ Foley's in the SE; with a branch office downtown. He still runs on the Common..little stooped but a good Mayor at a tough time in Boston's history..a good man. He had/has his demons but he worked very hard for positive race relations in the city...and made many enemies for it. He had the courage to stand up to it. Thumbs up for Ray.Foley's is South End; much gentrified. Flynn is from South Boston..not so gentrified (which made his politics that much more difficult for him)..but both areas have improved vastly over the last few years.

She announced to the group she was with that she had just become a great-grandmother. Congratulations.

how the heck would you know who Amber Rose is? I just had to look her up and still wouldn't know who she was after looking at the photos.
If you ever took taxicabs or the subway, you would be forced to notice her Smirnoff ads.

“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”
