WSJ has a short writeup on Tucson today. I've enjoyed Tucson on several visits, and have been awed by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

It's a tad chilly right now, though. Low of 42 and a high of 76 today. Bright sun, though.

Where to eat: Tucson has an eclectic culinary scene, but is particularly known for its fantastic Mexican food. The downtown outpost of El Charro Café is a lively, casual spot that has been around since 1922. Try a generous margarita and the Enchiladas Banderas, three enchiladas (including the delicious barbacoa shredded beef) topped with flavorful -- and colorful -- sauces arranged to look like the Mexican flag (311 N. Court Ave., Tel. 520-622-1922, www.elcharrocafe.com). Barrio Grill is a glossy bar/restaurant serving food with a Southwestern edge. Entrees include fresh fish of the day tacos with black beans and guacamole served with habanero tomatillo salsa (135 S. Sixth Ave., Tel. 520-629-0191, www.barriofoodanddrink.com).

You guys have done well in Belgium and Oxford, but can you do Tucson? Can you make my membership here worth it?

I haven't visited Tucson recently enough to have current info.

But, I'd like to get there again. Temps were over 100F earlier this week, which is pretty warm

Yeah, not much up to date info. Best seems to be a 36-hours in Tucson article in the Times from a couple years back. Mostly looking for inexpensive-ish restaurants good for a solo diner. Mexican is a plus. El Guero Canelo has come up a few times and looks, if nothing else, totally weird.

when I was just in NM I ended up using Chowhound with not horrible results...it's just that you have to wade through a lot of chaff....and expect the praise to be way overblown for the good places.

I did a quick screen and came up with Maynard's Market. A restaurant and farmers market in the old Southern Pacific railroad depot. Looks like a nice place, based on the website, and the menu reads well.

Poutine on the menu struck me as a bit unusual, until I realized that many Canadians winter in Tucson.

Maynard's Market

Michelangelo Ristorante also looks interesting. Items from all over the Italian peninsula and islands.

Thanks guys, info will be duly forwarded. I don't have the vocation to wade through the Chowhound muck when it's not actually me who's eating there. Dedication only goes so far.

Stay at the Arizona Inn.

Charming place that has a bunch of history associated with it. Nice grounds and pool area. Very good service.

I was out there for a wedding so the food was event food but I'm sure that you don't want to eat there.
