recently concocted by me as a summer battler (though i'm sure i may have simply recreated a chestnut):
2 ounces light rum
.25 ounce midori
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
shaken with lots of ice and strained. a light grasshopper green, tangier than sweet, great on a summer evening.
the reason this is inspired by the badminton cup thread is that i've been thinking that a mint and/or thin cucumber slice garnish would be just the thing.

what you have is a daiquiri (i.e. rum sour) with Midori subbing for simple as the sweetening agent...i.e. a "Melon Daiquiri". a classic example of this sort of alteration is the Floridita/Hemingway Daq...subbing in maraschino liqueur for the simple and usually with a touch of grapefruit juice.
mint sounds like an excellent addition.

anyway, i'm calling mine a grasshopper. is there another cocktail of that name?

So far the only drinks I have "created" that we have had more than once are these:
Bathtub Drink
2 oz Amaretto
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz orange liqueur (usually Grand Marnier)
Stir over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with lemon peel. Drink in bathtub.
Summer Shower (Bathtub variation, inspired by Jaymes on the summer cocktails thread)
2 oz Amaretto
1 oz orange liqueur
Pour into a highball glass filled with ice. Top up with sparkling lemonade and stir. Garnish with lemon slice.

yes. several.
anyway...the daiquiri is not a rum margarita. rather, both the margarita and the daiquiri are versions of the sidecar (and, btw, the daiquiri predates the margarita...so if anything, the margarita is a tequila daiquri)....and, ultimately, they're all sours.
with all that said, David Embury, a long time ago, considered the daiquiri to be one of the six definitive families of cocktails. (he was wrong...but that's cause he didn't consolidate far enough...it's more like four families)

oooh we have 5000 posts in 2 hours potential here. but let me unsportingly nip it in the bud and say that i was joking. but given that there obviously are more than 4 or 6 cocktails in the world of drinks, pointing out that this is generally in the daiquiri family is not very useful. more interesting would be if anyone knows if such a variation is already commonplace. if not, you all owe me money.

yup, this chap appears to have made it and called it a "Melon Daiquiri" (your proportions are almost certainly superior btw)

i'm going to sue that bastard!
but yes, that sounds awful. that much midori will make it sickeningly sweet even before the rose's lime cordial joins the party.

the problem with concentrating on the green appellation is that besides all of the creme de menthe garbage (I've only had one palatable drink using that stuff), there are plenty of Chartreuse or absinthe featuring cocktails with some form of green in the name.
