The New York Times has an article today on the resumption of restaurant reviewing by the distinguished critic, Brett Anderson. Mr Anderson is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his work on the Katrina aftermath (how many restaurant critics hold a Pulitzer, I wonder?).

QUOTE
In its Friday issue, for the first time since every restaurant in the city shut down after Hurricane Katrina nearly three years ago, the newspaper was handing out beans alongside a formal restaurant review.

“The restaurant scene is once again robust enough to withstand critiques,” said Jim Amoss, editor of The Times-Picayune.

By one count, there are 105 more restaurants than before the levees failed.

Given that there is plenty of crime, political scandal and rebuilding news to fill the pages of the paper, one would think that the return of a simple restaurant review might not attract much attention. But this is New Orleans, a city dipped in gumbo and garlic butter whose essential culinary canon has not varied much since the late 1700s.

From the first days after the hurricane hit in 2005, food has played a central role in the recovery of New Orleans.

According to (now) confirmed reports, the Times-Picayune will become a three times a week print paper, and will rely on an upgraded and more robust website. About a third of the staff may lose their jobs.

I hope their restaurant coverage remains intact.

A son of some very close friends is trying to establish himself as a journalist in New Orleans.

Oy.

Well, it seems Brett Anderson is a victim of the downsizing at the Times-Picayune  .

That's unfortunate. He's been a champion of the restaurant community over the years, while remaining an honest reviewer from what I can tell.

I hope things work out for him.

Seems the paper said he was being laid off because he accepted a Nieman Fellowhip (which they also touted when he won it)'

What a waste.

Eater/NOLA offers a little additional information on the layoff.

The paper's food guy Brett Anderson tweeted a link this morning to The Replacement's "Goddamn Job," asking if it was the song of the day. (Sample lyric: "I need a goddamn job.") Twenty minutes later, he tweeted: "Turns out I picked the right song." Leading people everywhere to assume the paper had actually fired their James Beard Award-winning food writer. (See the tweet above.) This in one of the greatest eating and dining cities in the world?

Anderson had been selected for a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard, which looked pretty good for the paper in addition to being an honor for him. Hopefully this doesn't screw that up. At any rate, this is all kinds of fishy, but expect more of the same for other parts of the newsroom today.

There could be an Admin opening on MF if Brett wants it.

The Times-Pic:

The paper has taken to its blog this morning to report that it has offered Anderson the opportunity to return after his Nieman Foundation fellowship.

According to editor Jim Amoss:

We told Brett then that he would have a job with us when the fellowship ended. We should have communicated that this week when we announced the changes at our paper. We intend to honor our commitment to Brett. His work has been integral to the recovery of the dining scene in New Orleans.

Of course, nothing in the blog post says whether Anderson has accepted the terribly gracious offer to return to a job from which he was laid off, or whether he will return to the dining section as a restaurant critic.

In related news, Eater reports the newspaper's fashion critic will move over to full time food reporting.

(Honestly, you couldn't make up this nonsense if you tried...)

Prob make Brett the fasion critic...

This should hurt the paper, and rightly so.

Why live your life when you could curate it?
