First cold snap of 2009 has arrived in MN. We had several inches of incredibly light snow yesterday and the temperatures dropped like a rock overnight. This morning in Minneapolis the air temp is -16 F and the wind chill is -26 F. Brrr...

Take care with your water pipes mongo.

We're supposed to get whacked with some serious cold this week, too. But the snow, the snow... We've already got as much snow as we generally have at the end of February. And it looks like we're about to get another cycle of storms. Where to put it?

Did the Farmer's Alamanac predict that too? They seem to have got the NE pretty well right.

So far we haven't had any snow this winter. And it seems we are having more warm spells, they were talking about some leaf budding happening around town. It wasd 64 yesterday afternoon and 16 this morning. I have no complaints, I just need to keep my plants watered.

Does anyone know the basis for the Farmer's Almanac predictions?

We're getting that cold snap tomorrow. Thanks a lot, mongo!

The only thing worse than getting a cold snap is getting one after Mongo's already used it.

so far, this cold snap is absolutely unsullied by me. though not for long. did i mention i have to shovel? this is not for our benefit (the forester moves through the snow effortlessly) but for that of the ups and usps delivery people. as time goes by, investing $600 in a snow-blower may not seem like such a bad idea.

as per our latest excel energy bill december 2008 was 3 degrees colder on average than december 2007. this better not hold true for january. it was bad enough arriving in time for the coldest winter in 10 years, i refuse to experience the two coldest winters in 10 years back to back.

yes, i've been remembering to drip the kitchen pipes and to leave the kitchen cabinet doors open--and there has been no more pipe-freezing. so far.

I left all the doors and windows open last night and woke up to another 40 degree or so morning. It's warming up quickly and we're due for another high 70's day here. I'm not gloating. I'm cringing. All this warm weather right now is going to speed up the budding of the grapes. Which means if we get the usual March or April freeze, I'm going to have more wind machines going ALL NIGHT LONG even closer to the house than before. Vineyard owner neighbor has installed 3 new machines and there's a cement slab out there that I assume will be #4. The closest is now just 125 yards from the house. When they fired it up to test it back in October it made my kitchen vibrate.
Thursday: This morning, I say to my wife and my girls, the waffles we face are real. They will not go away. Cornmeal waffles, buckwheat waffles, pumpkin waffles, chicken'n'waffles. The waffles we face are serious and manifold.

I have been remembering this man with some real vigor over the past couple of days. He was a miserable stinker, although now that he has gone on to his reward I can't say what I really thought of him. But if I'm any judge of these things, I'll bet he's hotter than Squeat Mungry. DebVanD

I've opted to share a snowblower with my next-door neighbor rather than buy my own. I think we payed about $400 total and it is a mid-sized, four stroke, non-Toro. I've used it twice this year on the driveway. The rest of the time it wasn't worth the bother to fire it up and I just shoveled.

It really is cold out there. The sun dogs this morning were spectacular.

Here today we expect a high of 17 F, with lows around 5 below. We also have the added advantage of 25 mph winds that are 20 below. There is about a foot of snow on the ground. Tomorrow it will be about 15 F and snow a few more inches, and Friday we are expecting a high of 2 above.

The Boy is coming today to visit for a few days, and when I told him about the cold snap on the phone last night, there was a long, uncharacteristic silence. Hey, I'm not the one who decided moving to the urban Midwest in February was going to be a good idea laugh.gif I was heartened somewhat by noting that Louisville expects a day or so of 20 F temps later on in the week, but then back up to 40 F by the weekend. Pussies.

Computers. I saw an article on this last fall. In spite of their homespun facade they're quite scientific about it these days, consulting the Nat'l Weather Service & some meteorologists who specialize in long-term weather modelling & such.

Meanwhile the next 3 days are likely to be the coldest of the year for us. I guess that's already been noted. Still, I may start a thread in praise of Polartec fleece & long underwear.
