I should have added - we were in Manhattan for a Rose tasting at Crush. 16 Roses, some very interesting flavors and styles. Purchased a few bottles.

So we needed some food to wash down the roses before heading back to the Isle of Staten.

I just purchased an interesting Rose the other day.. I don't know if it's a true Rose but, it was from Lopez Haredia in Spain.. It said Rosas or something.. It was pinkish. Have you tried it?

Yes, that's a Rose. I'm almost certain that was part of last night's tasting. I'll check the list and notes Crush handed out when I get home.

On good years the Lopez rose can be outstanding, but not quite in the way you might expect from a rose. I didn't care for the current release so much (I forget the year) but the one before it was one of his best.

Me and ALicia took a tour of Lopez and I can tell you from the foot thick layer of mold in the cave that, all the whites come out a litte cheesy. I am really excited to taste this sucker.

I agree with you that they're not what you expect from a rose.

What I've been focussing on this summer are cab franc roses from the Loire. I'm really liking them.

If that was the one you were pouring at your barbeque last summer I'd agree---that wine was great, and not typical for a rose.

I had a Cotes du Provence one the other night, Corail, that I liked quite a bit.

yes. big fan.

I also love the LdH rose but as everyone else said - its not really roseish. Its got that oxidated note like the LdH whites.

Also like some of the gamay based roses.

ETA forgot about the rose Txakolis that are out there. Very refreshing.

Lots of good wine information here. Could one of the admins please split it off from the restaurant thread? Otherwise no one will ever be able to find it.

I think what's being referred to here is the Riojan Clarete. Like red wine, and unlike rosé, it's fermented with the grape skins, but with about 60% white grapes. The colour is far lighter than a rosé and is likened to 'onion skin'. Looks like this, or paler:

Daisy, that one was at the tasting last night. I ranked it second of the 16. It was excellent.

The best rose I've tasted this year is the 2008 Raymond Cellars Zinfandel Rose from Napa. Very, very dry with some good fruit and acid. It has a full, refreshing finish. Could stand up to almost any type of food. Retails for $18.

Sneak, didn't I serve you some when you were over last?

Like by the end of the night I can remember what we started with?

(Otherwise: yes, I think you did.)
