Having dinner with someone who's ideologically opposed to "fancy" restaurants, to "trendy" restaurants, to "pretentious" restaurants. (Even bourgeoise French would count as "pretentious".) And who won't spend much money. Who is open to ethnic food, but may not be that adventurous.

Where in Manhattan do we go? Prefer someplace not that noisy, where we could linger if we want to.

have you tried the combination pizza hut and taco bell on jamaica avenue? you might have trouble finding each other though if you don't arrive together.

The hipstervore places would be too "trendy".

Cantones, hmmmm, maybe.

ETA -- Actually, a hipstervore place that's more hippy than dude-ish would be OK. Which would fit?

Yeah, or a slightly white-washed Chinese restaurant in, say, Chinatown?

City Hall

Is Bloomberg dishing up mildly adventurous ethnic food these days? I had no idea he was so talented.

You know, Rich, before I started this thread, I was thinking that if Taboon were better located, it would be the place.

It's too bad Balaboosta is so noisy, cuz otherwise it would be perfect.

ETA -- This person would storm out of Chinatown Brasserie in a huff.

What about the bar area of Tabla on the later side, after the happy hour scene is over?

City Hall is actually a good restaurant -- although much too expensive for this person.

You could go to Great Jones Cafe, but the wine list might not be sufficient.

Wait. You're onto something here.

Now ALL of Tabla -- the whole restaurant -- is the bar area.

BUT (I should have specified) my companion has some stomach condition that prevents her from eating spicy food.

Um, even the upstairs, which is nowhere near the bar?

BUT (I should have specified) my companion has some stomach condition that prevents her from eating spicy food.

So I guess Grand Szechuan (even with the "safer" dishes) is out of the question then?

Has anyone been to Bar Breton? It is crowded?

Yes, even the upstairs, which is nowhere near the bar.

One menu, everywhere. And it's much closer to the old bar menu than to the old dining room menu.

Totally.
