I know we have some New York-based Bollywood fans here. Here's a way for them to beguile the evening hours.
I noticed this place quite by chance on the way to somewhere else, but had to return to investigate. There's very little information online (a Yelp review quite wrongly makes it sound like a downbeat girly bar; which clearly wasn't enough to put me off). No, no, it's a rather swish and comfy club devoted to the sounds of Bollywood. The movies play on flat screen TVs, but the center of action is the stage where male and female singers and a troupe of dancers recreate the familiar magic. They even do the thing where the dancers mime to the singers, like in the movies. There's a live band, and while the standard of dancing is mixed, the good dancers are a lot of fun.
Clientele, you will be amazed to hear, skews Indian, but it's male-female mixed. Far from the passed tip buckets and goldfish bowls of midtown and downtown Manhattan, when audience members want to show appreciation they rush the stage and bombard the dancers with handfuls of banknotes.
I didn't try the food, but an Indian snack menu is available, as well as the drink specials. Only downside, the sound system tone and volume is a little piercing.
Next Mouthfuls party, maybe. We could hire a charabanc.
