Orkney is wonderful but the food mostly sucks. The must sees are obvious. In approximate archeological order: Skara Brae, Maeshowe*, the Tomb of the Eagles, the Broch of Gurness, the Brough of Birsay, the scuttled German fleet at Scapa Flow (not that you can see much of it because, well, it's scuttled) and the Italian Chapel. We stayed in Stromness which is charming in a grim sort of way.
The the Creel Inn is meant to be good (it was closed for lunch so we didn't eat there).
*Book in advance.

I have spent a lot of time in Orkney over the years.
I have never had a good meal there.

Lucky for us, we're renting a cottage with friends and will do most of our cooking, if not all of it. We are only staying one night in the hostel until our friends arrive from Edinburgh with their car and dogs! I've never been to Orkney, so I am excited.
Four days in Edinburgh first, though. Visit some of the old haunts and discover some new.
