Thread title tailored to make it searchable.

Williamsburg? Knock me down. Theme? Primitive modernism, natch.

“It speaks to that part of us that longs for something real, organic, dirty and alive,” he says, “that wants to pick up some rocks, logs, meat and cook over a fire.”

I don't have that part. If I ever did, it withered and dropped off during a two week scout camp.

The menu...goes to wonderfully unexpected places and features succulent, fall-off-the-bone pig’s tail, a bright consommé made with herbs from the restaurant’s roof garden and a cashew-dressed vegan salad that tastes curiously like a classic Ceasar [sic].

That first quote made me laugh out loud. Twaddle.

As I said in a post elsewhere, the food was problematic. A bit dull. I assume that and the delay of the liquor license are the reasons for the very limited soft opening.

Do any of his places serve good food? and I don't mean passable burgers, but food that would cause you to think it's a positive for a place to be a Taavo Somer place?

Not really. Freeman's is a place to go for drinks and if you must have something very simple to soak up the alcohol. Peel's is for brunch or dessert---the baked goods are way better than the rest of the menu.

Isa is very pretty so I sorta have my fingers crossed on the food.

Everything I've tried at Peel's has been well enough executed. One huge virtue of Taavo's involvement is that his name is searchable and has more than three letters. This is another SEO-unfriendly name, although hardly in the category of Untitled.

I agree on Peel's, I didn't mean to imply the food was bad, it's just sort of generic for lack of a better term.

Good idea on the thread title.

Yeah, I don't think Peels blazes any trails, but it seems to deliver on its modest ambitions.

This Times hagiography leaves the strong impression that if you get the design/message right, the food doesn't really matter.

He is a career mediocrity from a culinary perspective. I mean, Peels and the Rusty Knot are fine for what they are, but he isn't any kind of prophet.

He is however an absolute genius at branding and trend forecasting.
