the Fanny Bays have got to at least partially be on the menu for the lulz? I can't imagine a brit not giggling at that. Or the witticisms surrounding an oyster for crissakes with that name.

I'm going to be at party tomorrow with one of the owners. I'll get him drunk and ask him.

And remind me to tell you next time we meet my story about that term and an encounter involving a server at a restaurant in Kenmare.

The duck terrine is delicious, a solid version with chunks of meat in it. Avoid the too-bitter mustard sauce served alongside. The oysters were especially fine the other night, Watch Hills and some from Massachusetts that were new to me, Wiannos. Meaty, slightly brassy and tasted ever so faintly of cucumber. They do a nice Vesper here, too.

After Fanny by Gaslight, we have no tears of laughter left.

Mmmmm, fried smelts. A special last night, perfectly cooked, sweet and delicious. A squeeze of the cheesecloth-wrapped lemon was all the little fishies needed. We also ordered oysters, 3 each for the two of us of Wellfleets and Fanny Bays. Excellent, but they came out six Wellfleets on one dish, six Fanny bays on the other--bit odd that-- so we had to swap plates halfway through.

Excellent Vesper, and a very good Tasmanian sparkling wine, slightly pink. A generous amount of which was comped. We ended up hanging out for several hours and it was as much fun as a bar in Dublin. Of course the two charming gents from Dublin we spent much of the evening schmoozing with may have been the reason for that.

Pre-Campesinos dinner here last night. The AC was cranked up incredibly high which would normally distress me but last night it was a delighful respite. They are still pouring the Tasmanian sparkling rose which is light and refreshing and the perfect thing to sip on a hot night. My friend was drinking a marsanne I tasted and thought very nice. And because it was so hot we shared just a few things. Duck terrine needed salt, so we sprinkled it after a little cellar of Maldon was produced, and my friend was so taken with the mustard served with it that she ate it all up spread on bread. Seared tuna salad is a cliche I know but Whitehall's is excellent: rare medallions of fish with finely shaved fennel curled atop, dotted here and there with hackleback roe. A good summer dish. We also shared an insanely delicious special: a rice bowl with curried squash, greens, bean sprouts.Perfectly spiced, very Pacific Rim. Great for a hot, steamy night. The place was slammed, a zoo, by 7, and we were lucky to get bar seats. Comps: wine.

Ran in here around ten last night for a post-movie bite, and while the salad and terrine and cocktails we ordered were all just fine the house sent out a dessert that was fabulous. A very simple pear and almond tart, subtle and sweet but not too sweet with beautiful crisp, short pastry. Mmmm.

Last night a little after 9:30 it was beyond slammed--and we had a reservation but were seriously considering decamping around the corner to Highlands--but within 15 minutes we were tucked into one of the tables in the windows in front and ordering oysters. I can't attest to the Beausoleils I know one of our party found fine but I can say that the Wellfleets were plump, creamy and briny. Fried whitebait and a burger all good and the roasted fish (I think corvina) with fingerlings and peas was delicious. Good rolls, good service, although my Vesper served on the rocks was rather weird. So weird that I sent it back which a manager sweetly complied with. But apparently their go-to is to now serve this drink on the rocks. So you are warned. Whatever, I still like the cocktails and food here, and oysters and service are great.
