And the nominees are....

Hint: a whole lotta Hugo.
I'd give it all up, for just a little bit more.

I agree, but I think it was much better than Descendants, Moneyball or The Help. The first two were good, enjoyable movies, but not Best Picture!.* The Help kind of sucked.

*of course, the best picture of 2011 may not be Best Picture material.

The Help did suck, and while War Horse did not I didn't think it was all that great. But it's big and loud and heart-wrenching and we know the Academy loves that.

In the Best Actor category: Michael Fassbender was robbed. And I am told that as good as Ryan Gosling was in The Ides of March (and hello, no nod to George Clooney for Best Director?) he was equally fine in Drive so that may be an injustice as well.

I hated Tree of Life so very much I wanted after viewing it to slap the director. Pretentious swill with deadly boring, albeit beautiful to behold and no doubt off the charts technically, fantasy bits that made me glad I was watching at home and could go empty the dishwasher or somesuch until that part was over.

There are lots of things to like about The Artist, but I think the concept is actually better than sitting through it. Once you get it, you have to keep sitting there until it's over. That said, a movie about movies probably has a leg up on other films.

Yeah, he got picked clean.

SAG winners. SAG awards are often a precursor of Oscar victories in that the Screen Actors Guild is the largest bloc of Academy members.

I guess nobody here cared much about the telecast either. I did watch it, because I find it a pleasant way to spend an evening in a bar, and I am always on the look-out for that.

Apparently the audience figures weren't great. I wonder if it's just possible that Billy Crystal doesn't appeal to a younger demographic? I mean, it comes across as corny, embarrassingly old-fashioned schtick to me, and I'm over fifty.

Not sure Flomax jokes really strike a chord with a general audience.

Not even Justin Bieber could save Billy. Too bad Eddie Murphy dropped out. Chris Rock would have been a better choice than Billy.

I had to look it up to see what it was!

I liked the show for the most part. I loved Emma Stone - her enthusiasm seems so genuine. I also loved Jim Rash mimicking Angelina Jolie's pose. In fact, I think Jim Rash would make a great host.

Well, maybe. His background with the Groundlings was as a writer, more than as a performer.

He's on Community now so I assume he's comfortable in front of the camera.

The two minutes of Chris Rock telling the academy things it doesn't like to hear ("If you're a black man, you can be the voice of a zebra or a donkey") was indeed a highlight, and a reminder of why he won't get invited back.

I suspect many of the people who signed off on Billy Crystal as the host for the 9th time seem to perceive him as a hot young comic.

That may have been true in 1990, but the guy is 65 now
