The NY Times has a short feature about Bernie Wagenblast, whose voice is used as the announcer for closing doors, train ID, etc. Mr Wagenblast was the voice of Shadow Traffic in NY for many years.

Several readers offer comments about the announcements and the need for expanded use of "the next train to arrive" digital messages now being phased in. One expresses concern that the gender specific directives are offered in a female voice ("the next stop will be") while the male voice directs people to stop blocking the doors, etc.

Mr Turnstiles?

Contrast this to Rutt's Hut, an old school Jersey hot dog legend. You can't even get across the parking lot without encountering pigeons who are so bold that they try to take bites of hot dogs from people who are walking to their cars. These pigeons are so brazen that they routinely shake down rats for lunch money.

A while ago, they did an article on the voice on the automatic train countdown announcements, like the ones you hear in the L stations. ("The next L train to arrive will be on the...8th Avenue-bound platform.") She lives up in Maine or New Hampshire and is also the "voice" for several airports' announcements.

They should get John Sterling to do the subway announcements. I can hear him now.
