Vegetarian Options at Top Restaurants

Hi Everyone,

I'm just getting started on Mouthfuls and finding some great stuff on here. I'm writing in connection with my blog, "Without Bacon" (http://withoutbacon.wordpress.com). I review the vegetarian options at top restaurants, primarily in New York but also beyond. I would love to get any comments/feedback on the blog generally, as well as tips on places to go. Finally, if anyone is interested in also writing for the blog, let me know; I'm looking to potentially add another writer or two.

I believe Per Se's veggie menu is supposed to be the gold standard.

Peter Luger's too.

The quality of the porterhouse on Peter Luger's vegetarian menu has gone downhill.

But WB, some of us do not take kindly to the thought of someone joining just to promote his/her blog. Or to ask members to write for it--do you pay?

Point taken, Suzanne. I've actually been e-mailing with people from here more generally (before my account was "validated") and am not posting just to promote but also participate. (Of course at this early stage you'll just have to take my word for it...) But duly noted.

I think if you're not interested in vegetarian restaurants, then Dirt Candy and Kajitsu shouldn't be on your list.

Btw, I think Hemant went vegetarian recently, you might want to check out his food at Tulsi.

Midtown, not Murray Hill.

I'm not focused on vegetarian restaurants, but if places seem especially notable I've added them to the list (hence Kajitsu and Dirt Candy).

A couple of comments:

1. You might look into the vegetable tasting menu at GT.

2. The photography needs to improve. (I saw your blurb on the post about Devi. Flash ruins any picture where it appears in general, and tends to be intrusive w/r/t restaurant settings.)

Thanks for both pointers. I've been to GT, but long enough ago that I don't even remember what I had. Definitely something to add to the list. Agreed as to the photography. On the one hand I don't want the bulky big camera but on the other hand cell phone pictures just don't cut it.

I don't do much restaurant blogging these days so can't offer you advice on cameras, plus the clunky one I use is from 2006, an eternity in Internet years.

There are people (taion, alice, OTB, Daniel, Lex, Wilfrid) who do the restaurant blog thing, have great photos and who can give you pointers about improving your skills. You don't need a bulky camera either; just something that can shoot well in interior/low-light settings. (although to be clear, Daniel and Lex don't have blogs of their own that I'm aware of, but they do regularly post great pix when they eat out)

I was serious about the Per Se suggestion.

Also, what's that WV all-tofu restaurant...it's not a vegetarian restaurant but I assume it caters to them well. It's supposed to be very good.

I seem to recall that Beachfan (or rather the vegetarian Mrs. Beachfan) liked the old Bouley very much.

There's a scathing indictment of Bouley and LB in the blog. Apparently LB only serves "pasta with mushrooms" (which the LB menu calls black truffle carbonara) to those who don't want to eat fish or seafood at a fish and seafood restaurants, while Bouley is too busy thinking up new soups and salads to care.
