Went to the Pot Kiln which is connected in some way with the Harwood arms, a gastropub in Fulham.
The Pot Kiln is even further away from London (joke) in Berkshire --
quite easy to get to once you know where it is or know how to operate your satnav.
Nice rural atmosphere without being too rustic.
It specialises in game -- at this time of the year, hare, rabbit and deer etc.
We had salad of wood pigeon with black pudding and bacon
and a pate of wild rabbit and deer with piccalilli, and
for mains, braised beef cheeks (excellent but conventional) and
deer liver with a fried egg (and more bacon).
My first time with deer liver -- stronger flavoured than calves liver, no particular venison connection,
but very good, cooked rare.
Rhubarb fool afterwards.
Definitely worth going to if you are within striking distance -- Newbury races, on your way to Bristol, etc etc.
Not quite worth making a trip specially from London unless you are really obsessed with game.

I am a big fan of The Pot Kiln and the owner, Mike Robinson was kind enough to invite me to go hunting with him a few years ago.
The Pot Kiln
Mike co-owns the Harwood Arms with Brett from the Ledbury and a lot of the game comes to them via Mike and Vicars Game dealer, where it is processed.
I still recall eating a breakfast of fresh roe deer liver topped with a fried pheasant egg and a glass of cold hard cider after our early morning in the fields.
Slapsie

I actually thought while I was eating it how nice that dish would be for breakfast!
