Another day, another event This is a fun one - and underpriced as these events go:


Second Annual Tasting Brooklyn April 3, 2012 5:30pm - 9pm at the Dumbo Loft at 155 Water St.

Tasting Brooklyn celebrates Brooklyn's culinary diversity and features some of the borough's hottest restaurants including Maison Premiere, The Meatball Shop, Littleneck, Fort Reno, The Saint Austere, Egg, Kiwiana, Wild Rise and many more - full list below. Drinks will be provided by Brooklyn Oenology, Brooklyn Winery, Brooklyn Soda Works, Sixpoint Beer and more. Proceeds benefit the Brooklyn Food Coalition, which promotes healthy eating practices to Brooklynites.

Tickets and more details here: General Admission is $50; VIP $70 (includes an exclusive VIP Preview 5:30pm- 6:30pm and VIP only gift bag of locally made Brooklyn treats from Liddabit Sweets, Ovenly and Brewklyn Grind and more).

Okay, maybe it's just me but I put it on my calendar a month or more ago then decided against going and made plans to join others in Flushing for dinner instead. The format has weaknesses but that isn't what stops me... after all, I've gone to many just like it and will be going to more. No offense, but this line up just didn't inspire me. Some of the places have some buzz for me but most don't. If Mile End, St. Anselm, Robertas, Forcella, Vanderbilt, or another 20-30 others I can think of were there, I'd have been more interested. But, really? The Meatball Shop, Fornino, Palo Santo.....?

i get that the buzz ratio may not work for you but i like that it's a mix of buzzy/new and old places, ones i'd never check out otherwise. also, the event is totally underpriced for what it is IMO.

I'm very glad I went early, because it was a fairly small space and even the VIP hour was kind of nuts. Particular highlights for me were St. Austere's very rich & creamy polenta with sausage and cipollini onions, Kiwiana's Marmite and NZ honey-marinated baby back ribs (tender, fatty, and not too sweet), Benchmark's pastrami-cured short ribs, and the 2-year-old Parmesan D. Coluccio & Sons brought.

Since Brooklyn is such a shlep for me, it was really good to be able to try a little bit of what these restaurants have to offer. I think the 4-course-for-$30 deal that St. Austere is offering on weekdays is great, and if the rest of their cooking matches the level of the polenta I will be there very soon.

It was very good to see nuxvomica and Mr. nux as well.

i also loved those ribs from Kiwiana, Benchmark's pastrami-style cured short ribs, which came with truffled sauerkraut (it worked!), polenta from The Saint Austere. Also, curried crab from Chery's Global Soul, Tchoup Shops duck liver brisket boudin sliders, Palo Santo's ceviche with a bit of popcorn, Fort Reno's corn cakes with smoked brisket (and a sauce that packed quite a punch) and The Sunburnt Cow's sweet pork bun. Egg had a nice rice and ham croquet that was creamier and lighter then the rice balls nearby. Pizza from Wild Rise, Littleneck chowder, there was so much more. I didn't even get to try everything, there was just so much food.

I didn't like the ones from Sweet Loren's--the coconut oil taste was really strong, almost soapy. I think I literally spit out one of the cookies (thank goodness I was home). The Chocolate Room's cupcakes were enjoyable, as were the whoopie pie and brownie from Robicelli's.
