I carried his guitar case for him once. Aged 91. TV personality, instrumentalist and author of the guitar tuition manual which everyone read, when everyone was forming bands in the 1960s.

Correct. Indeed, George Harrison is on record as having learnt to play using Weedon's manual.

Isn't that like saying that William Shakespeare's high school teacher is more influential than Shakepseare?

If he'd taught Jonson, Marlowe and Webster too, that might not be a bad argument.
