The term "breaking down" has been used in pedagogy for decades. Usually in the context of breaking down a math problem into its components, or breaking down a sentence into its elements. Way back when, that was described as diagramming sentences.

Maybe that's where all the PhD candidates who are now wielding saws and knives learned the term...
