Whoever invented this stuff ought to be shot. Now having looked up wiki I know who they are: chemists C. L. Sandquist and Joseph Shivers at DuPont's Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia. And now I know this piece of trivial piece of information-- "spandex" is an anagram of the word "expands".

Over the years, I've bought cotton shirts, trousers, blouses made with around 3% of this horrid material but it makes my skin crawl and within 1/2 hour makes me feel my temp has gone up 5 degrees. I've thrown out bags of clothing b/c I hate it so much.

The thing is, when you first try on clothing with a little spandex in it it looks fitted and quite nice. I won't be fooled again.

I thought for a second that Spandex had died.

I'm so glad I don't mind it. I love the way clothes with a little spandex fit.

Have you given a talk/presentation (and I'm sure you do that quite regularly) wearing these things though?

Yes and I haven't noticed a problem. If anything, I feel more confident, knowing that I don't look like a slob. I hope you hvn't but a bug in my ear!

Spandex makes me uncomfortably hot too. I tried those no-press, stain-resistant 100% cottons (travel shirts) but they don't breathe either.

Me too. I have jeans with about 2% spandex that look and feel really good.

Those are my fave jeans because they don't catch at the knee when you sit down, they just stretch like part of your skin.

I don't understand how the current spandex/yoga pants trend has taken hold so much that women wear them at all times and everywhere. Running, yoga, fine but just around town? At work? Every time a coworker wears them, I ask her why she didn't feel like getting dressed that day.

(and they are quite unflattering on a large percentage of those who wear them)

I thought it was just a Jersey thing. I guess not. Of course I haven't been out of Jersey, apart from NYC, in quite a while.
