friends' extraordinary act of generosity has put me in possession of a nespresso machine. it's a totally fun toy and the coffee is pretty darn tasty but someday i will run out capsules. has anyone here experience with reusable capsules compatible with the nespresso? any recommendations for brands/sources? things to look out for? best type of coffee to use in the refillable capsules? best methods to refill them?

'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

My experience in selling the machines is that you have to go through Nespresso website to get new pods. They aren't available at the retail level. That said you can probably get them through amazon, ebay, etc.

There could be a grey market on the street where you could walk in and buy new/recycled pods, or a change in their business model, but the website was the only way to go.

I'm not familiar with any 3rd party making Nespresso-compatible pods like Senseo, Keurig or K-cup.

I did hear that there was a website where you could send your used pods but I never investigated it to find out what the benefit of that was. Some kind of exchange program?

I'm no longer in the 'biz' so my information may no longer be accurate.

I haven't thought of refilling them with my own coffee, but that's an interesting experiment. Would tinfoil wrapped around the pod work? I'm concerned that without the foil sealed to the edge it could make for an explosive mess. But hey, it's not my machine or kitchen we're talking about here.

FWIW, Starbucks is coming out with a pod machine this fall.

The laser copier and printer people fought off brand replacement cartridges for years, so I'm sure Nespresso will do the same. Selling fifty cents worth of toner for $50 is a pretty good deal for HP, etc. Esp if people recycle their empty toner cartridges.

Here's one replacement alternative. I haven't used it, so I'm not offering an endorsement

I see refillable capsules on Amazon at a reasonable price.

I face the same dilemma.

i don't want fake capsules, i just want empty refillable ones in which i can use my own coffee. am trying to be cheap and green at the same time.

important to know when your machine was manufactured when you select a refillable capsule. in 2010 nespresso redesigned the chamber that delivers the cartridge so that the bottom gets crimped or dented during ejection from the machine basically destroying some of the early reusable capsules. clever nespresso. a work around has been developed, but you need to know if the cylinder that holds the capsule is smooth or channeled in order to buy the correct one for your machine.
