Aka George Jefferson. He was a lot younger than I thought--this means he was only in his late 30s when "The Jeffersons" first went on the air.

I was surprised at his age, too. He's younger than my parents, but I always thought he was much older.

His character taught me the word "honky", and I liked it.

He had an impressive television history. Nearly forty years is a pretty good run for any actor.

The NYT obit mentions his co-star, Louise Jefferson, was 20 years older.
"Peter Kiewit looked for three things in hiring people. He looked for integrity, intelligence and energy. And he said if a person didn’t have the first…that the latter two would kill him. Because if they don’t have integrity, you want ‘em dumb and lazy. You don’t want ‘em smart and energetic.”

I'm surprised to read that The Jeffersons ran until 1986. In my head it's so embedded into the 1970s that it seems out of place, even in the early 80s.

Someone at work quipped about him movin' on up.
I'd give it all up, for just a little bit more.

“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”
