I had never thought of venturing inside Julius on West 10th.  I thought of it as a gay bar, but walking by a few times recently (it's just across from Louro, pretty much), I noticed that the clientele is actually pretty mixed these days.  So tick another dive bar off my list.  The hamburgers don't look as good as Corner Bistro's, but the place has a nice, lived-in feel.  Understandably so, if it has truly been operating as a bar since 1867, making it about ten years younger than McSorley's.

Let's hope Mr. Notar can find a way to re-invent the place without eradicating the memories.  Keith McNally, after all, succeeded with Minetta Tavern (although we'd still like the painting of Joe Gould put back).

 

Through an accident of fate you have been put in the same position over the Lenox Lounge as I was over the Minetta Tavern.  Let's hope the new edition of LL doesn't become so swell that it isn't worth the hassle of getting in.

 

The new owner can keep the LL's bones intact but he can't replace its heart.

And speaking of heart, I finally got around to introducing Deb to the charms of Montero's last Saturday afternoon.  The crowd there is a rainbow coalition of hard bitten regulars, new recruits who savor the atmosphere, and occasional tourists.

The regulars, to an amazing extent, make the outsiders feel welcome.  We were invited to attend Montero's gala New Years Eve party and join the regulars in welcoming in 2013.  
For those of you who might not have visited Montero's in awhile, they now offer souvenir tee shirts.  They come in two styles - regular and wife beater.

the owl farm on 9th st between 4th and 5th ave in park slope has a great beer selection and from my limited experience a not too boisterous crowd.  will definitely spend more time there.

beer list at the owl farm is a little less esoteric than it was a month ago but still very much worth going to.

PJ Hanleys (est 1874) is on the chopping block.

 

This was a strange place.  Lovely interior.  Awful karaoke.  People emerging from the restrooms with bad sniffles.
